Katherine Pettus (nee Thompson) is a musician and word wizard. As “Auntie” she is a story teller and keeper of big books. It is appropriate that Georges and Jean Luc will have a new member of the family in their next adventure. In March she added the title of “High and Auspicious Order of Magia, Mother of the Poet” to her Curriculum Vitae. She also holds a Master of Music Arts from Ohio University with a focus on Violin Performance.
She is a believer in “The Big Hat” theory of children’s writing, which holds that it’s o.k. if a child doesn’t immediately know what each word means–that they will grow into it, as the story calls them back for repeated readings. Perhaps this stems from her own early love of Shakespeare, reading his complete works before she turned 12. Her understanding grew with each re-reading. (Trust me. Kids can understand far more than most people give them credit for.)
So I suppose it is obvious that she really doesn’t mind when the little ones sneak into the library for a late-night adventure–even when they should be sleeping.
