Laying Down A Layer

Timid Jimmy is the story of a young boy who moves to the country and conquers his fears. This, the cover page, shows Jimmy in his city environment. Jimmy lives in the middle house, a Trinity, or Bandbox row house.

The illustrations for Timid Jimmy are pen, pencils and watercolor. Thompson makes his sketches in pencil, and then puts down a wash of approximate color, building very slowly as the paint dries fully between washes.  He then pulls out the colors with pencils and outlines are sharpened and finished in
