Between the story and the illustration, there is a dreadful interlude. I present a talented artist with my words, and also with my vague, stick figure doodles of what each picture should or could contain. Then Thompson creates a world. He sits at his desk sipping scotch and (often, but not always) smoking his pipe, and he takes my words and my crude, labeled stick figures and breathes life.
This is just the top room of Timid Jimmy’s city home. Pictures, clothes, light bulbs, boxes under the bed… here is a world, loved and whole. Waiting for you to unfold.
